The Nationwide Power Annual Critical Power Sales Summit

In mid-February, our team at Nationwide Power hosted the 2019 Power Summit. We flew in team members, vendors, and OEM partners from across the country to talk critical power infrastructure. The week-long Power Summit included topics like 2018 performance, industry and economic trends, quality, innovation, and continuing education.
Here are just a few of the achievements in 2018 we’re excited to share:

  • NP received Eaton’s highest designation of reseller, Certified Eaton Premium Power Partner.
  • After several years of sales achievement awards from Hitachi-CSB batteries, the current fiscal year is on track to be a record breaking one for Nationwide Power.
  • Sales Representative, Terry Westergard, took home the “Top Producer” award for new business.
  • For the fifth year running, our team exceeds an average 4.9 out of 5-star rating from customer reviews.
  • Our IT department unveiled a series of internal, proprietary software designed to further the company’s commitment to cutting edge technology to support the highest levels of quality and service for its customers.
  • In 2018, we celebrated 500,000 hours worked with zero safety incidents.
  • We also completed the 3rd straight year of zero lost time work accidents.
  • The team welcomed new Field Engineers throughout the country to keep up with the growing demand for high quality service.
  • 2018 marked another year running of double-digit growth.

Jim Hallingstad, Vice President, notes, “This is an exciting time for our organization. Quality was the underlying theme throughout 2018, and last week, we reinforced that this will be the new normal. As we continue to grow at an aggressive – yet sustainable – rate, we as an organization must also be prepared to expand without sacrificing quality and service. I am proud of the accomplishments our team has made over the years, and 2019 is shaping up to be another great year.”

The Power Summit hosted some of our top vendors and OEM partners, including Eaton and National Power. According to Jim Hallingstad, “We believe strongly in our core values, which puts the customer first, and we seek out and build strong partnerships with those who share similar values. We have some exciting things on the horizon with our OEM partners, and suppliers we have partnered with over the years, and look forward to sharing more as the year progresses.”

Other highlights include:

Nationwide Power’s core business is the sales and service of uninterruptible power supplies and UPS batteries, along with supporting other critical power system components such as emergency generators, switch gear, and HVAC. To learn more, visit www.NationwidePower.com

Case Study #127 | Read the Fine Print

Nationwide Power™ is the leading provider in the critical power supply industry. Our core business is the sales and service of uninterruptible power supplies and UPS batteries, along with supporting other critical power components such as emergency generators, switch gear, and HVAC. We publish critical power related case studies, highlighting best practices and quality standards. In this case study, we review the full-service contract terms of another service provider, in attempts to educate our customers on how the terms of service can impact their out-of-pocket cost.

There is no argument that the strongest level of protection for any UPS system includes a full-service contract. In the event of an error or system failure, with a full-service contract, the provider will come to your site and complete all diagnostics and repairs at no additional cost. However, we have discovered that some service providers have included provisions in their contracts that drastically limit their coverage levels.

In the example below, the service provider gives the customer the opportunity to add on additional service levels. However, in the fine print, the additional services selected are only covered for a portion of the contract period. In this example, it is the customer’s responsibility to thoroughly read and understand the fine print in its entirety.

At Nationwide Power, we believe in transparency first and foremost, and our full-service contracts are indeed full service. Here are a few questions to ask other service providers to ensure you are truly comparing apples to apples when reviewing service contracts from different providers:

  • What parts are not fully covered for the entirety of the service contract?

In the example above, the customer would pay a surcharge for the added coverage, only for that coverage to expire after the first 6 months of entering the service contract.

  • How many field engineers are physically located in your service zone?

If you encounter an emergency situation with your critical power equipment, you will want to know how quickly a Critical Power Professional™ will be able to arrive on-site. Believe it or not, some companies will position themselves as having a national footprint, only to fly their field engineers across the country. Not only is this an expensive way to provide preventive maintenance, but it becomes nearly impossible to respond to emergency situations.

  • What is the “out-clause” in the service agreement?

A reputable and qualified service provider understands and is confident in the value of their service, and therefore does not lock customers into iron-clad, long-term contracts. If your service contract does not have a 30-day out-clause, keep looking.

  • What type of on-hand inventory does your company house?

Some independent providers merely act as middle men with very little warehouse inventory or none at all. There are also independent providers that resort to storing their inventory in outdoor areas where equipment and parts are subject to whatever weather conditions exist throughout the year. Look for a company with ample parts and equipment inventory on-hand that are properly stored to ensure lasting quality. Additionally, if your equipment is approaching or has passed EOL (end-of-life) recommendations, ask specifically what parts that company has available to service your equipment. The most cost-effective solution for your equipment may be part replacements. However, if the service provider does not have access to those parts, they will recommend new equipment despite your best interests or budgetary needs. Check out our recent new article on Why Size Matters.

Why Size Matters

The industry of uninterruptible power supply is an interesting one. Over the years, we have seen UPS service providers make claims that become challenging for them to fulfill due to being beyond their current infrastructure.
When comparing quotes from multiple UPS service providers, it is important to do your homework and not take the quote at face value. Awarding a contract based on price alone is often much more costly in the long run, and here is why:

Every Nationwide Power contract comes with:

  • The most experienced and diverse Field Engineer team in the industry. [1]
  • Our commitment and track record of extending the lifespan of legacy equipment well past the OEM end-of-life.
  • Access to over $10 million in parts and inventory in a 57,000 square foot climate-controlled warehouse. We have the ability to send in-stock parts same day and get your unit up and running right away.
  • When the time comes to replace batteries or equipment, our volume discounts are passed down to our contracted customers. Additionally, you will have access to refurbished and surplus equipment

How does this compare to the other guys? We said we have seen some interesting things over the years. Here are a few examples:

  • Outside storage of UPS equipment and parts inventory. It would be very upsetting to receive a refurbished unit or replacement parts that have weathered multiple seasons.
  • Claims to have access to parts inventory or refurbished equipment, but the corporate office and warehouse are located on the 52nd floor of a downtown building. Logistically, this would be a near impossible setup.
  • Claims to have a national footprint, but the corporate office is a small home apartment.

How do they get away with it?
This scenario happens because some customers are focused on price alone, and forget to truly pre-qualify their UPS service provider.

True statement: we receive calls from these ”service providers” regularly, as they are looking to purchase parts from Nationwide Power or sub-contract our labor in an effort to service their clients.

Protect your critical power assets. A little groundwork to pre-qualify providers can go a long way.

Can you tell which warehouse belongs to Nationwide Power?

A

B

C

The answer is: A! Believe it or not, B and C are satellite images of two of our closest competitors.

In conclusion, the next time you receive multiple quotes, do a little homework first to make sure you are truly getting the best deal. Here is your guide to finding the best UPS Service Provider.

[1] Average experience: 22.5 years as of 10/29/2018 with an average 8+ years of direct OEM experience.

Recycling and Proper Disposing of UPS Batteries – Doing Our Part

Recycling and Proper Disposing of UPS Batteries – Doing Our Part

Recycling and Proper Disposing of UPS Batteries – Doing Our Part

Lead-acid and lithium batteries have many uses in all parts of the world. Lead-acid or lithium batteries are the backbone to any uninterruptible power supply system, and a lot goes into their proper recycling and disposal.

The combination of sulfuric acid and large amounts of lead in UPS batteries can be highly toxic. Exposure to excessive levels of lead can cause damage to the brain and kidney functions, along with a lengthy list of other health risks. In developing countries, over three million people die each year due to lead contamination from the processing of lead-acid batteries.

Nationwide Power is committed to doing its part when it comes to proper disposal and recycling of UPS batteries. We have partnered with regional recyclers that deliver loads of used batteries to North American smelters each month. Proper removal and recycling of UPS batteries is included in every UPS battery quote.

Additionally, Nationwide Power stays current with the latest developments in UPS battery recycling and environmental safety. As one example, we have been closely following AquaMetals, a US based company that could be on the brink of revolutionizing the recycling process for lead-acid and lithium batteries.

The Importance of Preventive UPS Maintenance

The Importance of Preventive UPS Maintenance

News Article

The Importance of Preventive UPS Maintenance

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are designed to keep your business up and running when electricity supply is disrupted, whether during surges or a complete outage. One of the most common and most costly misconceptions is that UPS equipment requires little to no maintenance.

Your uninterruptible power supply system is a complex and highly technical piece of electronic equipment. Certain components, such as capacitors and batteries, have a very specific shelf life, and when ignored, can lead to failure in your uninterruptible power supply system. Recommending timely replacement of specific UPS parts is just one way preventive UPS maintenance will help in extending the life of your equipment.

In addition to age-based recommendations, the Critical Power Professional™ will provide performance-based recommendations as well. You should receive a Maintenance Inspection Report with a full review of the performance levels of your UPS, including environmental conditions, thermal scanning and any abnormal signs that point to early deficiency detection.

The frequency of UPS preventive maintenance checks varies based on client-specific needs and the age and condition of the system, and ranges from one to four inspections per year. Regular UPS preventive maintenance will:

  • Maximize uptime
  • Reduce outages and accidents
  • Improve energy efficiency
  • Decrease operating costs
  • Prolong the life of the UPS
  • Avoid common and easily overlooked risks

So, what is the risk of avoiding routine preventive maintenance? Given that you already have, or are considering purchasing UPS equipment, the likelihood is high that your business requires 100% uptime. Lack of UPS preventive maintenance can lead to catastrophic and costly failures. As easy as it may be to take your uninterruptible power supply system for granted, consider the true cost of downtime to your organization. Depending on the industry, the cost of downtime ranges from loss of production, loss of revenue due to an inability to service customers, loss of confidence and future revenue from existing clients, medical devices falling offline, and probably the most frequent cost: lost data.

Your company has spent anywhere from $1,000 – $100,000 for accommodating an uninterruptible power supply system to ensure 100% uptime, and now you are tasked with ensuring the system runs properly and without failure. You understand the importance of preventive maintenance, but where do you start when selecting the right company?

Finding the right service provider can be just as important as identifying the right UPS system. A qualified UPS maintenance provider should be available for both preventive UPS maintenance and emergency service. You should have a written contract outlining the service window expectations when a failure occurs. You should also look for a company who offers a full service contract over just preventive maintenance. For a nominal annual surcharge, any emergency repairs will be covered under your contract terms. The reputation of the service provider is also key. You will want to know what the average years of experience and qualification level is of the field technician who will service your equipment, and you should look into reviews of current and past clients as well. Lastly, a multi-brand provider will have experience with all major manufacturers, and their recommendations will not be limited to one particular make.

When was the last time your UPS system was serviced and maintained? If it’s been more than 12 months, then it’s time to have your UPS inspected.
