ApplicationIT Data Room
SynopsisUnit fans were non-functional. Smoke was reportedly seen emanating from an outlet receptacle.
Preliminary ActionsThe Maintenance Bypass receptacle needed to be replaced, however due to this particular model being out of production, the original manufacturer had a lead time of 4-6 weeks to ship. Without the receptacle, the UPS was not able to support the customer’s back-up server in addition to other network equipment.
ResolutionNationwide Power has an extensive inventory of common and rare parts in stock, and a vast network of resources. The part was onsite and installed by a Nationwide Power Field Engineer within days of the original call, instead of having to wait for the original manufacturer. This greatly reduced the downtime and exposure for the customer, while also reducing costs.
Root CauseOver time, the current draw through the outlet might have caused an overheating condition due to loose or poorly crimped connections. The wires terminated on the outlet had solderless lugs landed and secured by screws to the circuit breaker. One of the lugs may have been partially crimped or crimped onto the insulation of the wire, barely making contact and resulting in increased temperature that at some point became hot enough to melt the wires. However, if the customer had just started using the outlet and there was a loose connection, then the overheating may have occurred very quickly.
