The power path is the entire roadmap of how electricity flows through your facility, from the utility pole on the street to the final piece of equipment. Unfortunately, in some installations, source voltage for a UPS may unknowingly be shared or interrupted by other applications. Understanding how your system is connected is essential to preventing failures.

In this Nationwide Power™ (NP™) case study, an industrial manufacturing facility experiences a UPS power module failure following routine electrical work. A sudden alarm on their Eaton 9PXM unit signals a potential issue for overall operations. We highlight the importance of understanding your power path and relying on rapid, expert-driven solutions in high-stakes scenarios.

SynopsisA customer placed an emergency service call after their Eaton 9PXM UPS triggered an “input fuse open” alarm. The alarm occurred after the customer had placed the UPS in maintenance bypass to perform unrelated electrical work on nearby receptacles.
Preliminary ActionsAfter the initial phone contact, we confirmed the alarm and dispatched a Nationwide Power Critical Power Professional™ (CPP™) for on-site service to troubleshoot the equipment.
ResolutionUpon arrival, our CPP™ found the Eaton BPM Maintenance Bypass module. The troubleshooting process quickly identified a faulty power module that had shorted out. The CPP removed the damaged module, safely restarted the UPS, and confirmed the unit was back online and supporting the critical load. The customer was shown the faulty fuse and informed that a full UPS power module replacement (P/N: 9PXM-PXMSPPM 730-06188) was needed. The repair would take approximately one hour.
Root CauseThe UPS power module failure was a direct result of a short circuit created by the customer while working on a receptacle near the unit. This incident highlights the importance of understanding the complete electrical infrastructure around your critical power equipment before beginning any work. Performing this minor action correctly can prevent significant and costly consequences.
