Synopsis The customer placed an emergency service call after their monitoring system showed the UPS was on bypass and not protecting the critical load. The immediate cause of the alarm was unknown, but the situation required an urgent on-site response.
Preliminary ActionsWe sent a Critical Power Professional™ (CPP™) to the site. During the inspection, they determined that the unit’s battery breaker had tripped following a recent power outage that drained the batteries. Because the breaker was no longer engaged, the UPS power inverter could start but was unable to access battery backup power, triggering the “load unprotected” alarm. The CPP then reset the breaker, restoring battery connectivity and allowing the recharge process to begin. 
ResolutionThe immediate fault was cleared, and the unit was brought back online to support the critical load. However, the CPP identified the age of both the batteries and the UPS itself as primary risks for future reliability. To address this, Nationwide Power provided two quotes — one for a full new UPS system and another for battery-only replacement as a more budget-conscious option.
Root CauseThe tripped breaker was a symptom of a larger issue — an aging UPS with depleted batteries. Simply resetting the alarm, without addressing equipment lifespan, would leave the client exposed to future failures. This situation highlights the importance of moving beyond a break/fix mindset toward strategic decisions for legacy equipment.This underscores the need for regular inspections and a proactive approach to aging infrastructure.
